COSTA MESA -- Sarah Baxter added another impressive course record to her cross country resume Saturday night at the 32nd annual Woodbridge Classic, but this one carried a little more significance for the Simi Valley junior standout.

After competing in the girls' rated race in 2010 and not racing in the meet last season to rest a sore foot, Baxter made a big impact in her sweepstakes debut under the lights at Estancia High.

With Buchanan's Hagen Reedy, the reigning Div. I state champion, remaining within striking distance throughout, Baxter -- last year's Div.II state champ -- not only won the 3-mile race in 16 minutes, 12 seconds, but broke the course record of 16:20 set last year by Harvard-Westlake's Cami Chapus, now at Stanford. Reedy also ran faster than Chapus' standard, clocking 16:17.

"It really means a lot to me," Baxter said. "It's a really fast course and there's such a big crowd, so it means a lot to race here."

Baxter's performance, along with Desirae Jones (17:19) taking 18th and Sarah Riggs (17:34) finishing 25th, helped Simi Valley finish second with 113 points behind three-time sweepstakes winner Great Oak, which prevailed with 93 points. Courtney Korven (17:57) and Charlotte Utash (18:03) were 41st and 45th for the Pioneers.

"It was a hard race," Baxter said. "The crowd was so big and so loud the whole race, so it was really good to have all that great competition to run against."

Golden Valley's

Chelsey Totten placed fifth in 16:37, a 50-second improvement from last year, to help the Grizzlies -- who received a 40th-place effort from Abby Buckhoff (17:57) -- finish 14th with 305 points. Canyon was 18th with 407 points.

"This is my favorite cross country race," Totten said. "There are so many people out here that it makes everybody's times so fast and it was the perfect combination for a PR. It was a great season opener and I had a lot of fun."

With Nolan Del Valle clocking 14:43 to place third, Golden Valley won the boys' rated race with 158 points, ahead of Warren's 198-point effort. Newbury Park's Jonathan Byrne took eighth in the heat in 15:00, Golden Valley's Brendan Tinoco was 12th in 15:09 and Arnold Bautista (15:30) was 30th for the Grizzlies.

Saugus' A.J. Yarnall was ninth and Canyon's Zachary Wims took 10th in the boys' sweepstakes race, both in 14:44. Saugus' Rodrigo Ornelas placed 11th in 14:45, helping the Centurions finished seventh with 238 points. Canyon was 16th with 386 points.

Camarillo's Joel Gonzalez (15:12) was 43rd and Crespi's Jo Jo Cortez-Adams (15:13) took 45th in the heat.

Led by a sixth-place finish from Marisa Magsarili (17:27), West Ranch placed second in the girls' rated race with 119 points.

In the Div. II senior race, Harvard-Westlake's Ben Weissenbach - only a sophomore - stepped up in class and finished third in 15:12, with teammate David Manahan (15:26) finishing ninth.

Westlake's Rocky Pearson (15:15) was fourth and Simi Valley's Nikolaus Utash (15:22) and Jonathan Feller (15:25) were fifth and eighth. In the Div. II sophomore race, Westlake's Graham Rigby (15:48) placed third.

In the Div. I girls' gold race, Westlake's Jenny Giguere (17:51) was second, helping the Warriors prevail in the heat with 165 points.

Crescenta Valley's Erika Johnson (17:45) was second in the Div. I blue race, helping the Falcons tie with Las Lomas for third with 90 points. Hart's Megan Fairchild (18:15) finished 11th.

Gabe Collison (15:07), Matt Manalo (15:19) and Nick Beatty (15:25) swept the top three spots for C.V. in the Div. I boys' junior race, lifting the Falcons to the victory with 35 points, ahead of Saugus (57) and Hart (149).
