WHS boys’ cross country team wants to defend Division 2 state championship
Long-term goals take time, patience and mental strength commonly reserved for paratroopers swooping in behind enemy lines. There is very little public adulation— how many kids ask their favorite cross country runners for their John Hancocks? Once a race starts, there’s no going back. There is only the perpetual fight against time. “There are no timeouts, no halftime, no substitutions,” said Roger Evans, longtime head coach for theSimi Valley girls’ team. “When things go badly . . . there’s not a thing you can do in cross country. You hope that everything goes well.” Nobody ran a perfect race last weekend at the CIF-Southern Section Cross Country Finals at Mount San Antonio College, but a throng of local student-athletes and teams qualified for Saturday’s CIF State Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.
