There was a target on Khalfani Muhammad's back entering the season, one that grew larger every time he stepped into the starting blocks.

But the pressure and expectations only motivated Muhammad to perform better, resulting in a dominant conclusion to his prep career and his selection as Gatorade state boys track and field athlete of the year.

Muhammad joined Cathedral's Randall Carroll and Covina's Remontay McClain as California's only male athletes to repeat as both 100- and 200-meter state champions.
