Girls contingent leads area qualifiers for state track meet
11 reach state championships; 5 boys qualify
NORWALK — Ventura County’s representation at this year’s state track and field meet will have a decidedly female flavor.
No fewer than 11 girls qualified for state competition — along with five boys — at Friday night’s CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College.
Three of them qualified in the high jump alone, two more were in the discus and another pair advanced in the 3,200 meters.
The CIF-State Track and Field Championships will be next Friday and Saturday at Buchanan High in Clovis.
Abigail Smith of Westlake High is the area’s only double qualifier. Smith not only took sixth place in the 100 meters at 11.71 seconds, she also ran a leg of the 4x100 relay, which finished fourth in 46.73.
